Top spots for journalist briefings near Spark’s London HQ

Finding the right spot for a journalist briefing can be trickier than it sounds. You want somewhere relatively quiet, with space to talk, and ideally with decent food and drink. But the truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all. A quick coffee with a trade journalist calls for a very different setting than a sit-down lunch with a writer from a national – and what works for a two-person catch-up might not suit a larger group interview.
Luckily, Spark’s Oxford Street location means we’re spoilt for choice. Here are five venues we’ve used recently – and happily recommend – each suited to different styles of briefing.
Riding House Café, Fitzrovia
Riding House Café is ideal for informal catch-ups. The layout means there’s usually a quiet corner, and it works well for a quick coffee or working lunch in between meetings. Friendly staff and a relaxed atmosphere make it a popular venue with journalists and clients looking for something quick, easy and no fuss.
Circolo Popolare, Fitzrovia
If you’re looking for a venue that’s a bit more memorable, Circolo’s buzzy, over-the-top interior, 20,000 bottles on the wall and Italian menu make it a talking point in itself. It’s often busy, so it probably it isn’t the right choice if you’re hosting a recorded interview, but it’s perfect for longer lunch briefings. It’s well-placed for commuters too, being only a stone’s throw from stations like Tottenham Court Road and Goodge Street, just remember to book ahead.
Swift, Soho
Tucked away off Old Compton Street, Swift is a cocktail bar with versatility. It is on multiple levels, which means you are likely to find a quieter spot, especially earlier in the day. Alternatively, its location is perfect for after-hours drinks, spot on for if you’re hosting a briefing with a BBC journalist, with Broadcast House a short walk away.
The Edition London Hotel Lobby Bar/Berner’s Tavern
The Edition’s Lobby Bar has a calm, polished feel and plenty of space for conversation. It’s ideal for briefings where you want somewhere a little smarter without going over the top. Berners Tavern, also inside the hotel, offers the option of private dining if you’re hosting a longer sit-down.
Old Compton Brasserie, Soho
Bright, open and easy to get to, Old Compton Brasserie works well for everything from early coffees to late lunches. The booths offer a bit of privacy and space for two, or three-on-one interviews, and the flexible all-day menu makes it a practical choice for briefings at any time of day.
We’re catching up with journalists every week – and over the years, we’ve learned that the right setting can make all the difference. Keep your eye on our Coverage Cup page to see how successful journalist briefings translate into stories.
